Family Visits

My mom and sister, Mary Margaret, just came to see me, each in individual visits. It was so good to see them. It makes me feel more connected with folks back home when they see my life here. And it humbles me as I consider the distance they come and the sacrifices they make in doing so. I love love love my family!

Recently, some awesome people moved away from Prague. Betsy went back to VA and Sara, Jackie and Chelsa returned to Canada. TEARS! Jackie and Chelsa will return in June; they play ice hockey here. :) But, I dunno about Betsy and Sara... I do know that they are missed and have left a hole. There's no replacing these 2 chicks.

Kutna Hora

My friend Sara, who happens to be a Canadian ice hoskey player (isn't that cool?!!), and I went on a road trip to Kutna Hora the other day. It was about a 2 hr drive. Its funny; I get car sick now when I am in cars. I guess it's bc I am not used to being in them. We don't have to pull over or anything, but I just have to face forward. ANYWAY. So, Kutna Hora is a historical and protected sight bc it is incredibly old (13th century old). The main attraction there is a church called Sedlec Ossuary. Inside are the remains of appx. 40, 000 people. The amazing thing, though, is that at one point in history, they ran out of burial plots and so they started piling all the bones inside this church. A monk decided to decorate the interior of the church with the bones. My interior designer friend, Holly, put it well when she said, "Now that's going green!"

I am repeatedly thankful for my sweet dog, Maysea. God knew just what He was doing when He surprised me with her years ago. She is a huge joy to me here in Prague, each and every day. Plus, she's extremely well liked by all of our Czech neighbors and their dogs. :) My friend. Alta, took this picture of us for her photography class. Fun!

Christmas morning

Christmas morning at home was so wonderful! It was amazing to be with my family and in our home. It was especially great bc my niece and nephew, Margaret and David were there. David was thrilled over his new "Polar Express" train and Margaret adores her new Spiderman doll. As you will see, David does not particularly enjoy having his picture taken, but he was a good sport for the first 100 pictures I took. :) My cousin, Weston and his cute family came over for Christmas dinner which made the day extra special. They got a precious white lab puppy for Christmas !

ON CHristmas day my Dad steamed some oysters. This is one one my favorite things we do at home. The oysters come from The May River (in photo background), and they are some of the best in the world! so salty and pefect with come cocktail sauce on a saltine. The World at Sparta

I live by Sparta football (US soccer) stadium. I mean, right by it. Tonight was the biggest game, between the 2 Prague teams. I have never seen so many police in my life!!! This photo only captures a bit of the crowd. I felt too intimidated to phtograph the police as many were on horseback and/or had black Darth Vader -type helmets on their heads. These soccer games are my first experience with police tanks!

Family in Prague

This summer my parents, sisters and I spent some time together in Prague and then in Italy and Greece. Altogether I was with them for 2 weeks. It was so great to be able to hug them, as I have not seen them since end of Feb. when I moved to Prague.

During our week in Prague, we explored the city together, took a day trip to Terezin, and ate a meal with my team and two with my dear friend, Lucie. It meant a lot to me that they were able to see my life here. These are pics of us here in Prague. Mary Margaret, my other sister, joined us for the Italy and Greece portion.

Summer Interns

This summer we have hosted 5 interns. These folks are college students who wanted to get a taste of foreign missions. So they joined us for the summer and served alongside us. I have overseen them this summer. Amanda, Bryan, Lauren, Luke and Drew have live in my bldg. in flats on the floor below. I have discipled the women each week while Phil has discipled the men.

The interns have been so much fun and such an encouragement to me. They have spent lots of time building relationships with Czech and American believers and non-believers here in the city and have been salt and light in their lives as well as brought them to church. The interns have also done special outreach projects such as hosting free barbeques at Sir Toby's youth hostel as a way as reaching out to backpackers and getting the name of our church, Faith Community Church, out in the community.

I love love love these new friends of mine and will be lonely for them when they depart back to the States at the end of July. It has been such a gift to be able to grow alongside these awesome men and women of God.

Worship team

For several months now I have been serving as the worship leader at church. I love that because our church is so new, I get to be a part of helping shape and lead our worship. Our little worship team is typically composed of 2-3 vocalists (currently me, Laura and Elizabeth, 2 amazing American women who are teachers), and an awesome guitarist/ musician, Ondra, who is a Czech believer. He is in university here in Prague. But this summer the fabulous interns have been helping out, and they have added so much fun and creativity to our sound and time together.

Each week, based on the upcoming sermon topic, I choose the songs we'll sing :) (so fun) and then lead practice each Wednesday night in preparation for Sunday's service. I have learned a lot more about how God's grace is more than sufficient as He enables me to do this job for which I feel inadequte. Serving the church in this capacity continues to bring me much joy and satisfaction.

Here's a photo of us in our old location (which was a cafe). Pictured from left to right is Ondra, me, Elizabeth (an English teacher), and Luke (an intern and student at William and Mary. He usually plays a mean bass guitar but now he's hammin' it up with the shaker.:) Our services are no longer meeting at the cafe, but we now rent space in a Czech church.

Sixth Grade Prayer Warriors

Until last year, I taught 5th grade at a Christian school just north of Charlotte, NC. I taught there for six years. It was such a rich experience for me in many ways. The lower school faculty were like a family. We supported each other in prayer and shared honestly our prayer needs with each other in our meetings. AND we laughed and laughed together all the time. I feel like God grew me a lot spiritually, professionally, and emotionally during that time. Plus, I learned more about what it's like to be in real Christian community. Our amazing lower school principal, Susan, took me and a team of teachers down to Peru 4 times in 3 summers. There we had the privilege to work with Scripture Union (Union Biblica) and their Bible teachers. We held interactive workshops in which we taught fresh ideas for teaching the Bible to kids in the public schools in Peru. The missions teaching trips still continue today!!

This year's sixth graders (about 60 in all:) adopted me as their misisonary to support through prayer. What an honor!! I have really felt their prayers and am so encouraged by their faith. Recently, I have received 2 fat envelopes in the mail containing beautiful encouragement cards from the sixth graders!!! The cards were full of birthday wishes, scripture verses, and words of support. Several of them had jokes and funny memories we shared last year. I felt hugged about 60 times!! I want to thank the sixth graders again for their cards and their fervent prayers. I am honored to be your friend and sister in Christ. I love you all!!!

Escape

Sunny and I helped paint at the Davises' new flat the other day. They just moved in yesterday, and it is beautiful!! I am excited about the ministry that will take place there. So, Phil left before Sunny and I and shut the gate which locked behind him. When she and I went to leave, we could not get out!! So, we climbed over the fence and risked our lives, but we were not scared at all. Sorry, retraction.....we did not risk our lives, although Sunny (with her fear of heights) was a tad nervous. We tried to be incognito, so the neighbors would not wonder, but just as Sunny was climing down, a huge group of people appeared from nowhere. We were laughing so hard, she froze and couldn't do anything. You had to be there I guess, but it was a good time.

Weston

This is my youngest sister, Weston. She is a sophomore at a college in Virginia. She is studying in Spain for 6 weeks. On June 6 she is coming to stay with me for as long as I can keep her :) I am so excited about the time the Lord has given us to be together!!!!!

Castles

I have made a new friend, Lucie. She and I met in the park the other day as our dogs took off running together. She is Czech and lived 10 years in Canada, so her English is amazing. We had the best time talking! Last Monday she drove me, Maysea and her dog, Verdi, to 2 castles.chateaus. just outside of Prague. Both have huge grounds that are wooded and have lakes and streams. So, the dogs had a blast runnung and swimming. The castles were beautiful. We first visited Pruhonice. Then we saw Konopiste. This one was especially interesting to me because it was the country retreat of Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie. Their assassination by Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo Princip, essentially started WWI. Any 6th graders reading this remember this from last year's History?? I thought of you guys and was so excited. Rebekah and Petr

These are new friends of mine. I met Rebekah thru our ladies' Bible study. She has lived in Prague about 3 years. She came over here from Atlanta to be involved in ministry. While here, R. met her husband, a Czech named Petr! They are both believers. IN fact, Petr's grandfather was a pastor during the time of Communism and had an underground church. I love these two. Rebekah fixed me a delicious dinner the other night, complete with a delicious traditional Czech salad of chopped veggies, grated syr (cheese :) and tossed in this herb vinigrette. The meal ended with a tradiitonal Czech gingerbread- type cake. Delicious!! Thanks ya'll!

Stromovka

Okay, this is my favorite place in Prague!! It's easy to forget the spiritual darkness in this city when I see such natural beauty. But I am told that in the summer it is full of topless sunbathers. So, I think that spring may end up being my favorite time in Stromovka!! I just snapped a few photos today, but they do not do this park justice. God lifts my heart up in worship when I am in His creation. I am so thankful that He led me to a flat that is sandwiched in between two beautiful parks (Stromovka and Letna parks)!!!!!

Hair Party

The other night some of us from our ladies' Bible study gathered at Shanna's house for haircuts and snacks!! One of the women in our study is Alta. She and her husband are here from South Africa. Alta is a very talented hairdresser; plus she generously gave us a great deal on our haircuts!! It was such a fun time to be together and enjoy 2 very important things in life: good hair and yummy food :)

TV Tower

This just cracks me up as one of the many interesting things in Prague. This is a TV tower right outside of the Syvertsens' flat. After it was built, the residents complained about how ugly it was. So, an effort was made to make it more appealing (?) by adding the babies that look like they are crawling up the sides of the tower. Do you see them??!! Funny! Click on a photo to make it larger.

Easter Sunday

Today we went to the Syvertsens (family on the left of me in team photo) and had church. Phil (and his family on right of me) led us in some singing and then he gave a short sermon on the meaning of Easter. His precious daughter, Lucy, helped him. :) Afterwards we had a delicious brunch!!

Next week we will have our first "real" church service!!! More details to come on that SOON!!!

Cute French Place

Sunny and I ate breakfast here the other day. This is where the waitress was so sweet to Maysea and brought her a bowl of water. This place is owned by some French people and the breads and sweets are so wonderful. It's downstairs, below street level. I love these tucked away treasures in Prague.

Easter

Prague looks so pretty with all of its Easter decorations. With it's deep Catholic roots, the city observes Easter largely as a cultural holiday. There are eggs and stuffed baby chicks and bunnies in every shop window. In Old Towne Square there is a big Easter Market. There are rows and rows of little wooden kiosks that sell beautiful painted eggs, gingerbread cookies, cinnamon-type rolls, wooden toys, jewelry, etc. There is a big tree in the center of the square that is decorated with big Easter eggs. My photo does not do it justice :)

There is a tradition, still observed by the children, where the boys chase and hit the girls with wooden sticks decorated with colored ribbon. When the boys catch up a girl, she gives him chocolate eggs. And apparently, may throw water on him. It sounds really different than how we celebrate in the States! I talked to a Czech girl in college at Sunny's Bible study last night and she said her Dad and brother still wake her up on the Monday after Easter by hitting her with those sticks and then she gives them chocolate eggs. You can buy those sticks in the Easter market. I think it's rooted in some sort of fertility ritual (?)

Ladies Bible Study

Each Tuesday morning, a group of us ladies meet at Shanna's (team leaders') house. Every week we discuss a chapter of the book, Lost Women of the Bible (sorry; I don't know how to underline!) by Carolyn Custis James. So far we have studied Eve and Mrs. Noah. I led the discussion on Mrs. Noah yesterday, and it was so much fun! Of course, the author did lots of speculating b/c hardly anything is said about her in the Bible. But, it was interesting to think about her life and mine when framed by certain questions such as: 1) have you ever felt like you were in someone's shadow? (she may have felt like she was in Noah's shadow) 2) is there anything in your unceratin future that you fear or dread? 3) what difference does it make to put the frame of God's character around your situation?

Before the study , several of us take a yoga class!! It is a gift. Daniella, our teacher, is so sweet. She leads us in stretches that are very relaxing and relieve my body of lots of tension. Also, she does not bring in Eastern religion, which is nice.

Our group is great! We have a great time laughing together and talking about our hearts and our relationships to God.

Maysea

This is Maysea, my sweet black lab. She agreed to come with me to Prague, and to be honest, I can't imagine life here without her! Prague is such an incredibly dog- friendly city. I recently took her into a restaurant. She sat under the table while my friend, Sunny and I ate. The waitress even brought her a bowl of water!! I live between two huge, beautiful parks, Letna and Stromovka. When Maysea and I walk there, she brings me into all of my conversations with other Czechs and foreigners. I recently met two english teachers, one American and one Brit, because Maysea went right up to them as they fed the ducks in the pond. She then proceeded to jump into the pond several times after the ducks. Hilarious!!

Poor Maysea. She had an accident, so yesterday I took her to the vet. In his thick Czech accent he said, "Hold her tight." I did, and he proceeded to pull her entire dew claw (sp?) out. She yelped in pain for the longest time. I assume that was the best course of treatment. She is now hobbling around.

Here are some photos of her. She (and all dogs) has to wear a muzzle when riding on public transportation. Besides that, she seems to love Prague. After all, she's an extremely social dog! :) Here also is a photo of her with Heather's dog, Dixie. Heather is my new friend from Charlotte who graciously housed me for the first two weeks I was in Prague. She teaches at the International School of Prague.

I am thankful Maysea brought me to Prague. :)

My Family

I wanted to show you my family. This group of folks is one of God's greatest blessings to me. The sister in the back with my mom is Mary Margaret. She is "mom" to little David and Margaret, 4 and 2. She is such a funny and creative mother. David and Margaret are FULL of life. They bring much joy and tons of laughter into our family. Mom is the best mom ever, and is the type of godly woman I desire to be. Weston is beside David, and she is a sophomore at Washington and Lee University. She is wise, tender and a blast. Priscilla is the sister who is holding Margaret; she is a beautiful and brilliant attorney who deeply encourages me. Dad is holding the wine, and is the strongest and funniest man I know :) Mary Margaret's husband, Richard, is pictured with David in the other photo. Richard loves the Lord and each of us well.

My biggest fear in coming to Prague was that I would not be able to stand being so far away from my family. God has been so faithful in strengthening me and them. So far, so good! :) I do look forward to seeing at least some of them over here in June!!!

Birthday Blessings

Yesterday was my 35th, yes 35th birthday!! Agghhh- first the first time, I felt a little old. But, I am reminded of the truth of God in Psalm 139 (which is a great scripture, especially on one's birthday). "Oh Lord, you have searched me and you know me....All my days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." I am humbled and encouraged that He knows all the details of me and chooses to use me. He orchestrates each day of my life. After all, He "knit me together in my mother's womb!" (Ps. 139)

Some of the girls from our weekly Bible study (first and third from the left, Elizabeth and Sunny) and my team members (second and fifth from the left, Laura and Shanna) took me out to a FABULOUS real Italian restaurant for dinner. Several of us said it was the best food we had ever tasted.

Laura and Shanna gave me a gift certificate for a Thai foot massage!! More details on that later! :) I felt so loved by my team members and friends here in Prague as well as my friends and family in the States. My mom and sister, Priscilla, sent me a care package full of "treasures" such as Pam cooking spray, double- stuffed mint Oreos, and Starbucks coffee. My friend Kelly, who's in the States, had a beautiful bouquet of tulips delivered to me, and the sweet Davis family (my team leaders- Phil and Shanna and their children, Lucy and Clark) woke me up to a family rendition of "Happy Birthday" in the morning.

God is caring for me in such sweet ways as I begin life here in Prague.

Sunny and Snow

It snowed recently, a change from the warm weather we have had. This is my new friend, Sunny. She is a missionary from Kentucky. Sunny has been in Prague for 3 years. She holds a weekly Bible study/ theological discussion type-group in her home for Czech students who are non-believers. Cool!

Flat Found!!!!!!!

Friends and Family-

Thank you for your prayers regarding my flat search! Great news! As I type this, I am sitting in my comfy new flat. I moved in on March 14. God has really blessed me through abundant provision of a wonderful place.

On Friday, March 9, Shanna (my team leader's wife) and I went with my realtor to look at some flats in Prague 6 and technically, Prague 7, which borders it. We looked at this flat, it was furnished, and I loved it. But, the owner wanted $50 more per month than was in my budget, plus, there was no oven, washing machine, or sofa bed. So, my realtor called the owner and asked him to consider putting in those items. He said he would install the first two items, but not the sofa bed. I still was not convinced this was where God was calling me to live, as I still felt concern over the rent. So, again my realtor called the owner and asked him to lower the rent by $50/mo. He said no. Apparently, he is a wealthy man and does not really need this money. He said he was going to hold out for a tenant who would pay the advertised rent. So, I did not hold out hope that he'd lower it. (yes, I tend to foget that God is the God of the impossible!) At that point, I began to feel stressed and somewhat too consumed by the whole flat search process. I mean, we had looked at 14 flats so far!

I have a bad habit of trying to control my circumstances and then when they don't seem to be going my way, I stress out. THEN I go to God, to the Well. Saturday, I went to the Lord and got quiet before Him. God reminded me of the fact that He is my Shepherd, so I shall not be in need of anything. He reminded me that there in that moment, I was FINE, because I was/am covered in the blood of Jesus and that He alone is all I need. God refocused me with Himself in the center and with it came peace. I then worked on a Bible lesson on prayer. One of the questions was, "What would a bold, risky prayer be for you?" I responded that it would mean completely leaving the flat search and asking God to provide the perfect place for me in one month. So, I purposed and prayed. It was right and good (and about time! :) to give that over to the Lord and stop grasping onto it so tightly. I then journaled what a "perfect" place in my mind would be.

Over the weekend, I felt a refreshing sense of lightness and peace (since giving it over). And my mind, from time to time, drifted back to the flat.

Monday, I went to little Clark's music class with his mom, Shanna. The class happens to be right in the neighborhood of the flat and I found myself looking out the window and tossing that flat around in my head, again. Thankfully, this time worry was not driving me, it was a desire to just know God's will for my housing. I left music class early and walked around the block, passing by the flat's front door. Nothing new struck me, one way or the other. Once back at music I went to the restroom and found myself praying, "God, if you want me to live in this flat, please cause the owner to come down in the rent." Fifteen minutes later, we drove away from music and mt realtor called. She said, "Dorothy, the owner just called me and has agreed to come down on the rent. I think it is quite amazing, and I think you should take it." I was so excited and in awe, really, at what God had done. I felt humbled and convicted over my unbelief, but at the same time, I felt loved by my Father God. It was really sweet. I told my team leader Phil about the rent reduction and he celebrated by doing a perfect twist jump-type move:) I do have to confess, though, that I still did feel a tiny bit of hesitation, maybe b/c the flat was short a few items/characteristics I had put on my "perfect flat" list. But I believed that God had shown me this was where he wanted me, and I would follow Him there.

Thursday, I met met with the owner to sign the contract and was blown away by the extent of God's goodness. The owner told me that the internet service was already hooked up and would be completely free. The same was true with the TV cable. Plus, I discovered that the TV has a DVD/CD player in it!!!!!! Right now, David W., I am enjoying your beautiful guitar CD :) Also, this flat has a view of Prague castle which I had not known. Also, it is a loft flat, on the very top, so it's nice and warm, which is important to me. I get cold easily.

Through this, God showed me that He really does have my best in mind and that He alone knows what is best for me. I still don't know exactly why he put in this flat and what purposes he has for me here, but I feel completely at peace and am wet from my cup which runs over. It feels right and secure to be here at home in the center of God's Will.
